Objective criticism of Obama speech by Factcheck.org

It's not that I don't trust politicians, but they do have a tenancy to spin their words into what they want us to hear, not what really is.
Summary

President Obama sometimes strayed from the facts or made dubious claims during his hour-long evening news conference March 24.
• He said his budget projections are based on economic assumptions that “are perfectly consistent with what Blue Chip forecasters out there are saying.” Not true. The average projection by leading private economists is now for substantially less economic growth than the administration’s forecast assumes.

• He said he is reducing “nondefense discretionary spending” to less than it was under the past four presidents. Not true. His own forecast for the final budget of his four-year term puts this figure higher than in many years under Reagan, Clinton or either Bush.

• He said he was “angry” about “inexcusable” bonuses paid to AIG executives. But he glossed over the fact that his own aides insisted on watering down a Senate-passed amendment that might have prevented payment of such bonuses.

• He repeated that his budget is projected to cut the federal deficit in half by the end of his term. That’s true, but deficits also are projected to shoot up again later unless big policy changes are made.

I’m not patient enough to be a farmer.

I would like to have a home vegetable garden. It’s a dream that I haven’t given up on yet. However, I wonder if I have the patience to work my dream.
I purchased some very strong, healthy, beautiful strawberry plants, with the intention to have my granddaughter and I plant them together and then we would be able to watch them grow. I decided to place the plants in an area where she walks by when she comes to visit. I could see us harvesting the round juicy red fruit in early June. I can still imagine us sitting on our front lawn, munching on fresh strawberries just picked from my garden.

We planted the tender plants on Sunday, which was a seasonably warm March day. The instructions on the container indicated that planting could occur anytime after the soil was workable. My granddaughter and I had fun, we met a little worm along the way, wiggling out of the fresh turned earth, and I think the experience opened doors that this curious little person and I will visit again later.
The very next day, we were visited by a cold snap. As I went to work, I looked at the eight plants, and knew, I’ll have to protect them somehow from the evening chill.
19 degrees may be too much strain for the little plants to hold up under. I watered the earth around them, said a prayer, and piled leaves gently over their drooping tops hoping the decayed leaves will provide some protection from March’s frigid air temperature.
I peeked at the tender plants this morning. I don’t think they are going to survive. I can feel the frozen moisture in the leaves and stems. I’ll uncover them as the sun gets higher in the sky- perhaps there’s hope for one or two plants.
Another lesson of the fragility of life.
Another lesson in patience.

DAy 18- Experience Life Together

From Rick Warren Purpose Driven Life page 144
This will be my 5th round of reading thru this book.
It’s part of my public LENTEN journey
Feel free to comment, question, add- this is, as the say at Planet Fitness, a NO JUDGEMENT ZONE.

Chapter Title: Experiencing life together.
Point to ponder; I need others in my life.
Question to Consider: What one step can I take today to connect with another believer at a more genuine, heart to heart level?

Day 18

Rick writes, “ life is ment to be shared” Many days, I prefer to think that “ I am a rock, I am an Island- and a rock feels no pain, and an Island never cries.”
I do cherish what Rick calls “authentic fellowship” , not “ superficial chit chat”
I find that I grow from what he refers to as “heart to heart – gut level sharing” pg 139
These kinds of conversations require trust.
He also writes on page 142 that “ Fellowship is a place of grace, where mistakes aren’t rubbed in but rubbed out. … Mercy wins over justice.”
“many people are reluctant to show mercy because they don’t know the difference between trust and forgiveness. Forgiveness is letting go of the past. Trust has to do with future behavior.” pg 143

For me, trust, forgiveness and letting go of the past all have to happen in the moment. Every day brings it’s challenges.
Today, I’ll try to forgive and trust a fellow believer who spends a lot of time engaging in superficial chit chat with me.

Day 17- A place to belong

From Rick Warren Purpose Driven Life page 137
This will be my 5th round of reading thru this book.
It’s part of my public LENTEN journey
Feel free to comment, question, add- this is, as the say at Planet Fitness, a NO JUDGEMENT ZONE.

Chapter Title: A place to belong.
Point to ponder; I am called to belong, not just believe.
Question to Consider: Does my level of involvement in my local church demonstrate that I love and am committed
to God’s family?

Keep in mind; I see a difference between commitment to God’s family, and a commitment to God.
I also have come to believe that “Spirit”, God- image of Christ- however one calls this
mysterious entity, can be found in all living entities that we encounter.

Rick writes, “ the first symptom of spiritual decline is usually inconsistent attendance at worship services and other gatherings
of believers. When we become careless about fellowship, everything else begins to slide too. “ pg 132 Rick writes, A church family moves you out of self
centered worship, and we discover our role in life through our relationship with others.” pgs 131-132
On page 136- Rick writes, “ Attenders are spectators form the sidelines, members get involved in the ministry. Attenders are consumers; members are
contributors. The Christian life is more than just commitment to Christ, it includes a commitment to other Christians.”

Aren’t we all challenged with commitment issues? I don’t have enough time in the day. The people sitting next to me are hypocrites. I don’t believe fully what the
priest is saying. All the church wants is my money and more of it. I‘ve heard it all and thought it all as well.
I do believe that it is important to be a contributor and not sit on the sidelines in worship attendance and membership. Where ever one practices religion,
when we are within a group, experiencing the love and spirit of God with other humans, the energy is magnified.
This is a process, and it takes time to move from the self centered- I pray while I’m doing the Sunday cross word puzzle
to- yes, I go to mass every week and make that sacrifice of one hour to be with God and God’s family.
Try it, something wonderful might happen.

DAy 16- What Matters Most

From Rick Warren Purpose Driven Life page 129
This will be my 5th round of reading thru this book.
It’s part of my public LENTEN journey
Feel free to comment, question, add- this is, as the say at Planet Fitness, a NO JUDGEMENT ZONE.

Chapter Title: What Matters Most
Point to ponder; Life is all about Love
Question to Consider Honestly, are relationships my first priority? How can I ensure that
they are?

DAy 16

What matters most? “Life is all about Love” Rick writes on page 123.
He states a little later, “Learning to love unselfishly is not an easy task. It runs counter to our
self centered nature.” pg 123
He goes on to add on page 124 “Often we act as if relationships are something to be squeezed into our schedule.”

Does any of this ring true in your life. Do you wake up each day and say, why don’t I have time to visit with
….? you name the person… or persons.
If we follow the train of thought that God is love, other people in our lives represent God and God’s love,
and we let our self centered nature get in the way of relationships, then we are letting our self centered nature get in the way of
our loving relationship with God.
I’m thinking about Natasha Richardson this morning
Every day has the potential to be our last day.
Kiss your loved ones, make that phone call, forgive the hurt, open up to life in the moment.

DAy 15-Formed for God's family

Chapter Title: Formed for God’s Family
Point to ponder; I was formed for God’s family
Question to Consider; How can I start treating other believers
like members of my own family?

Day 15
I have to chuckle when I re read that statement. Don’t all families give each other heartache and trouble along with fun and loving hugs? I think we do treat other believers of Christ and all other prophets in such a manner, like family. We push other believers away if they don’t speak about Christ in the same terms as our teachings are spoken. The world is full of child like and childish believers.
Rick is talking about a concept that is controversial. On page 118 he states, “There is only one condition to be part of God’s family- faith in Jesus.” This is a phrase that stops many good people cold. What about my neighbors and friends who don’t have faith in Jesus- the kingdom of heaven is not open to them?
I suspect that this is another case of human administration of the church and God on earth by humans.
I like the phrase, “on earth we are given the riches, his grace, kindness patience glory wisdom power and mercy.” As Catholics, we are taught that these are the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Once I accept these gifts, no one can take them away from me, however, as a human, I can drift away of my own free will.
On page 120, Rick talks about Baptism as a way to publicly announce “ I am not ashamed to be part of God’s family” I understand why people don’t have their children baptized, because they don’t have faith in the process of being part of God’s family.
I try very hard to imagine that each person I come in contact is Jesus- that Jesus is part of my family- and I try to treat my human family as though they were Jesus. Doesn’t always work ! but I keep trying.

Day 14- When God Seems Distant

From Rick Warren Purpose Driven Life page 113
This will be my 5th round of reading thru this book.
It’s part of my public LENTEN journey
Feel free to comment, question, add- this is, as the say at Planet Fitness, a NO JUDGEMENT ZONE.

Chapter Title: When God seems distant.

Day 14
Point to Ponder: God is real no matter what
Question to consider: How can I stay focused on God’s presence, especially when he feels distant?

God is real no matter what. I’ll not ever deny the existence of God- or Spirit- what ever term you want to use.
Just look around you – evidence of something, an entity – that is unique and powerful – is everywhere.

The challenge we face as spirits in physical bodies is to maintain that belief, sometimes on faith
when things go wrong in our lives.

I stay focused during the times when I feel closeness and when I sense distance
thru prayer and meditation, including chanting Buddhist chants -
Rick includes a quote on page 107
“ The Lord has hidden himself from his people, but I trust him and place my
hope in him. ( Isaiah 8 : 17)
No more needs to be said!

Day 13- Worship that pleases GOD

From Rick Warren Purpose Driven Life page 16
This will be my 5th round of reading thru this book.
It’s part of my public LENTEN journey
Feel free to comment, question, add- this is, as the say at Planet Fitness, a NO JUDGEMENT ZONE.

Chapter Title: Worship that pleases God

Day 13
Point to Ponder; God wants all of me
Question to Consider; which is more pleasing to God right now- my public worship
or my private worship? What will I do about this?

Rick, on page 101 writes that “God is please when our worship is accurate.
He then goes on; to worship in truth means to worship God as he is revealed in the Bible.

I’ve been attending a Catholic church for worship for the past 35 years, and I believe (and some one correct me if
I’m wrong) that Catholic teachings don’t follow the Bible word for word, as the literal works of God. I think we believe
that they are inspired words, spoken/written by humans.
Rick also writes; “God is pleased when our worship is authentic.” Rick quotes a verse “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
“God hates hypocrisy” Rick adds.
I think Rick is expressing the concept of thoughtful worship, by any means that the individual feels a connection to God. He lists worship thru nature, rituals, solitude, battling injustice, celebration m adoration and study as many ways to worship.

As a young girl, my parents made the decision to not attend worship services at a local church. Their reason, they saw people in church on Sunday that my parents believed were
being unfaithful to their spouses at other times. They didn’t want to worship with hypocrites. As kids, we didn’t mind, this saved us from having to go to church on Sunday.
I had the same experience as an adult. However, I had the benefit of having been around the Benedictine Sisters, who have a habit of saying, “ you don’t know what’s in a persons heart at the moment. “ And, Rick Warren writes, on page 105- and I paraphrase, God wants us to live for him. Offer our bodies and souls as living sacrifice.
“ the problem with a living sacrifice is that it can scrawl off the altar, and we often do that.” aka- the cheating spouses”

I think that how we worship in our hearts is most important to God- my private worship.
( which includes study) My public worship- I interpret as how I conduct myself in public, and that, hopefully
mirrors how I worship in my heart. But, as I am human, I do slip- in my public worship.

My thought for the day, What we carry in our hearts- is the heart of the matter regarding Worship.

It’s part of my public LENTEN journey
Feel free to comment, question, add- this is, as the say at Planet Fitness, a NO JUDGEMENT ZONE.

Chapter Title: Developing your friendship with God

Day 12

Point to Ponder; I’m as close to God as I choose to be.
Question to Consider- What practical choices will I make today to grow closer to God?

“ Draw close to God and God will draw close to you “ James 4: 8

“ God doesn’t expect you to be perfect, but he does expect complete honesty” pg 92

We don’t like to admit that we do wrong, we sin. Catholics use the word sin- in a whisper.
Everyone sins. I know I do! I sin when I step off the path that God set out for me.
“Genuine friendship is built on disclosure” pg 94
God prefers authenticity. We are challenged to grow past our “hidden rift with God” pg 94.
Isn’t it the same in our personal lives?
We are challenged to grow past the rifts we have with other members of the human race.
We must learn to believe, on faith, that God uses everything that happens for Good!.
This action of faith is part of the process of developing a friendship with God.

Day 11-Becoming Best Friends with God

Chapter Title: Becoming Best Friends with God

Day 11
Point to Ponder: God wants to be my best friend.
Question to Consider: What can I do to remind myself to think about t
God and talk to him more often through out the day?

I agree with Rick’s comment on page 87. You become friends with God through constant conversation.
“Friendship with God is possible only because of the grace of God and the sacrifice of Jesus.” We have
direct access to God as a result of Jesus death. We no longer have to live in the Old Testament ways, only preparing to
meet God, we have been given the gift of friendship, and we only have to accept it with open hearts.
Constant contact, on a daily basis, is how I build a relationship and friendship with GOD. The challenge is that
life gets in the way. Isn’t that true of all of our relationships.
How did that Joni Mitchell song go…” you don’t know what you’ve got … til it’s gone.”
Keep in touch with the people you value, and in that way, you keep in touch with GOD.

Day 10- The heart of Worship

Day 10
Point to Ponder: The heart of worship is surrender.
Question to consider: What area of my life am I holding back from GOD?

This is another challenge. I guess I could say some days I surrender, some days I hold everything back from God. My guess is, this is part of the human condition. I like the phrase Rick uses at the end of the chapter, “ now is your time to surrender to God’s Grace, Love and Wisdom.” If you subscribe to the Power of Now- that means, that each moment we need to surrender, as the moment comes along.
Rick speaks to this on page 83. There is the moment of surrender, and “ there is the practice of surrender, which is moment by moment, life long. The problem with a living sacrifice ( that’s us) is that it can crawl off the alter, so you may have to resurrender your life fifty times a day. ”

I think I can see this process at work in my life. I am a recovering control aholic- and I have to give up control daily- and it’s similar to surrender to God. The trick is to remember!

Chapter Title: What makes God smile?
Point to Ponder; God smiles when I trust him

Question to consider; since God knows what is best, in what areas of my life do I need to trust him most.

Well, I must say, in this area, I am able to practice more fully. 10 years ago, I was very involved in letting my ego
self direct most of my actions. I need to trust God in all areas of my life. Some days, I need to get out of my own way!
Rick writes on page 76 “What God looks at is the attitude of your heart: is pleasing him your deepest desire? “

When Serving God, Listen to Your Heart
by Rick Warren
A man's heart reflects the man. Proverbs 27:19 (NIV)
*** *** *** ***
The Bible uses the term "heart" to describe the bundle of desires, hopes, interests, ambitions, dreams, and affections that you have. Your heart represents the source of all your motivations – what you love to do and what you care about most. Even today, we still use the word in this way when we say, "I love you with all my heart."
Where did those interests come from? They came from God!
God had a purpose in giving you these inborn interests. Your emotional heartbeat is a key to understanding your shape for service. Don't ignore your interests; consider how they might be used for God's glory. There is a reason that you love to do these things.
Listen for inner promptings that can point to the ministry God intends for you to have.
This is excerpted from The Purpose Driven life daily devotional.

Day 8 - You were planned for God's pleasure

Feel free to comment, question, add- this is, as the say at Planet Fitness, a NO JUDGEMENT ZONE.

Chapter Title: You were planned for God’s pleasure
Day 8
Point to Ponder: I was planned for God’s pleasure
Question to consider; What common task could I start doing as if I were doing it directly for Jesus?

Now that’s a very good question.
I do understand the teaching that I hear each day, “that which you do to the least of me, you do to Me.” per Jesus somewhere in the new testament. Though some days it is a challenge, I do my very best to stop and say – this person in front of me represents Jesus. It takes a lot of faith to believe, as Rick Warren does, that “ the moment you were born in to the world, God was there as an unseen witness, smiling at your birth. He wanted you alive, and your arrival gave him great pleasure.”
I do have to take this concept completely on faith, because my ego wants proof.

Day 7 It's all for him

This will be my 5th round of reading thru this book.
It’s part of my public LENTEN journey

Chapter Title: The Reason for Everything

Day 7
Point to Ponder; It’s all for Him.

Question to Consider: Where in my daily routine can I become more aware of God’s glory.

The chapter opens with the statement, “It’s all for him” I guess that it’s my ego that has trouble with that statement.
I have, however, tried to make it a practice to give thanks to GOD everyday for the events of the day, no matter what happened.
I try to take a deep breath of fresh air and thank GOD for life. I use this as a centering activity.
I guess that action is also there to keep my ego in check. So, instead of thinking that it’s all about me, I am reminded that its all about God.

While I'm writing- I'm thinking

I'm thinking about a Muslim extremist- who believes they are pleasing God by caring out a suicide mission.
Do they sincerely believe that in their heart? or are they acting out of fear?
Are they lying to themselves?

Day 6- Life is a temporary assignment

Chapter Title: Life is a Temporary Assignment.

Day 6
Point to Ponder; This world is not my home.
Question to consider; How should the fact that life on earth is just a temporary assignment change the way I am living right now?

I’ve heard the phrase “I’m just passing thru” from a dear person in my life for almost 35 years. It has, and to some degree still frustrates me.
The phrase frustrated the control freak in me. When something goes amiss, I want to repair the problem.
However, with age and experience, I do see that I am not in control of what happens in life. I am not fully on board with life after death.
Rick quotes the psalmist 39: 4 “Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered, and that my life is fleeing away. “Even in ancient times, this humble human was aware of life on earth was like “ just passing thru”
How have I changed my way of living, now that I am aware that I won’t be here forever? Try to make every day count! Live each day as though it were my last

Chapter Title: Seeing life from God’s View

Day 5
Point to Ponder: Life is a test and a trust

Question to consider; What has happened to me recently that I now realize was a test from God?
What are the greatest matters God has entrusted to me?

The opening sentence in this chapter is “The way you see your life shapes your life.”
I’m thinking about a program I saw on TV last night about the Crusaders in Turkey. I wonder how they saw their lives and the purpose
of losing their life for the Kingdom of GOD. And, also, the act of murdering “infidels” in the name of GOD.

I don’t see myself ever going on such an awful crusade. I do see this type of act as part of what turns people away from religion.
I would like to be able to go on a Crusade of Unconditional Love. I thought that I was capable of such a journey; however, life showed me that my human fragilities were such that I wasn’t up to the task. I am now in the process of remaking myself into the person
I thought I was, and still want to be.
The way I see myself, will shape my life, with GOD’s help.

“ unless you are faithful in small matters, you won’t be faithful in larger ones.” Luke 16:10

Day 4- Made to last forever

From Rick Warren Purpose Driven Life page 40
This will be my 5th round of reading thru this book.
It’s part of my public LENTEN journey
Feel free to comment, question, add- this is, as the say at Planet Fitness, a NO JUDGEMENT ZONE.

Chapter title- Made to last forever

Day 4- Thinking about my purpose
Point to ponder- There is more to life than just here and now
Question to consider- Since I was made to last forever,
what is the one thing I should stop doing and the one thing I should start doing today?

I should stop worrying and start trusting GOD today.

I have a couple of challenges with some of this reading. There is the phrase, “if you learn to love and trust God’s Son, Jesus, you will be invited to spend the rest of eternity with him” The writer infers that those who don’t follow Jesus won’t find peace in eternity.
Recently- I read an interesting comment about this subject, the writer (and I’ll have to find the quote at another time) introduced a new idea. I’ll paraphrase- It’s none of your business whether or not the other person believes in Jesus- it’s your business only to keep your self on track.
The other challenge, “death is not the end of you! Death is not your termination, but your transition into eternity, so there are eternal consequences to everything you do on earth. Every act our lives strike some chord that will vibrate in eternity.”
I have two thoughts- First: If we all thought about the consequences of our actions, perhaps earth would be a better place for all. It seems in order to think that way, we must get to a mature spiritual place, and not operate from a childish – my way or the highway perspective.
Second: I don’t think we take the idea that there are eternal consequences for our actions on earth very seriously. Our feet are planted in a space where we believe that humans rule the earth.
What do you think.

Day 3- What drives your life?

From Rick Warren Purpose Driven Life, page 27
This will be my 5th round of reading thru this book.
It’s part of my public LENTEN journey
Feel free to comment, question, add- this is, as the say at Planet Fitness, a NO JUDGEMENT ZONE.

Chapter Title: What Drives Your Life?
Day 3 – Thinking about my purpose.
Point to Ponder- Living on purpose is the path to peace
Question to consider: What would my family and friends say is the driving force in my life? What do I want it to be?

John and I watched the movie “Body of Lies” last night. It was a mediocre movie, but served to divert our attention from things in the “NOW” The content of the movie did set us both thinking about many world issues that we do try to avoid, due to the complexity of them. And, the fictional portrayal of social, political and religious conditions in the Middle East did reinforce our opinions.

What Drives my LIFE?
I like the statement on page 31. “Knowing your purpose simplifies your life. It defines what you do and what you don’t do. Your purpose becomes the standard you use to evaluate which activities are essential and which aren’t. You simply ask, “Does this activity help me fulfill one of God’s purposes for my life?”

I’m prepared to admit that I worship a God of Peace with Justice- that would be the Catholic phrase I hear each Sunday. We also hear each Sunday, “that which you do for the least of ME, you do for ME.”

I think my family would say that what drives me is seeking to see everyone happy.
(Though I know now, that’s a near impossible task)

I would say that in 2009, I can see that I strive to point out hopeful paths to people.
And, I see the challenge to portray GOD, as a GOD of PEACE, vs a GOD of Vengeance.

It may seem like an up hill battle, but I am forever hopeful that PEACE will prevail

What drives your life?

Why I hesitate to say to loudly GOD drives my life

The Culture of the Middle EAst, portrays GOD as a vengeful and controling entity as then reflected in their political / social structure.
I feel that we are trying to move the worship of Jesus Christ beyond the realm of vengeful control and into a realm of spiritual peace. And we are hoping to attempt this in a country at puts a lot of emphasis on freedom of religious expression.

Golshifteh Farahani was detained by authorities in her homeland in August (08) after making plans to visit Hollywood for a series of meetings with directors and casting agents. They also confiscated her passport.
State news agency officials at IRNA claimed the 25-year-old did not obtain the necessary permit from the ministry of culture and Islamic guidance in order to appear in the U.S. movie.
According to the New York Daily News, Farahani has since had her passport returned to her, although Islamic officials are continuing their investigation into whether she broke the law by making the film without permission.
And she has been living in France with her husband since the incident, uncertain if the Iranian government will seize her documents upon her return to the country.
She tells the newspaper: "I'm on trial. I'm totally in love with Iran. I have family there. But now, if they want to see me, they have to leave...
"I had a lot of problems because of this movie. (Iranian officials) took my passport. The intelligence service interrogated me several times. In the end, the judge said, 'We have to see the movie and then decide what we're going to do with you.'"
Farahani - who plays DiCaprio's love interest in the film - is the first Iranian-based actress to appear in a Hollywood film since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
