Another excerpt from the Hervey White Diary
In despondency came a friend to MR. Brown. He made acquaintances with Levi Harder at Rock City and Mr. Harder understood the situation. He said the coming of the art colony to Woodstock was the only thing that could save it from destitution; that the village was as poor as a church mouse. The farms had been neglected and grown up to brush on account of the quarry business. Then the bottom had dropped out of the bluestone prices since concrete had been substituted for flagging and the only source of income was the crop of summer boarders
