I have it on good authority that the price at the pumps is $1.79 a gallon. Now, at Getty in West Hurley this morning, the price was $ 2.29 Could it be an additional 50 cents of our price goes toward transportation and state tax?
And last night, with a "coupon" from our grocery store, we were able to save $0.40 per gallon. Down from the now low of $1.59, that was a tank fill up for $1.15/gallon!
Used to be we had to travel to NJ to get cheaper gas prices, and have the gas pumped for us as well. ( gas is still lower in Jersey) No wonder New Yorkers are leaving the state to retire elsewhere.

The increases are an illusion. Gas is cheap.
